Safer recruitment training has been mandatory for the recruitment of school staff and volunteers since 2010, meaning that a recruitment panel must have at least one member who has completed the training, or that any individual in charge of recruitment must be certified. It's a vital part of creating a safe and positive environment and making a commitment to keep children safe from harm, relevant to all organisations working with, or providing services for children and families.
The course is designed for headteachers, senior leaders, governors, business managers, HR professionals, helping create an ongoing safeguarding culture as well as providing guidance on how to respond to concerns and allegations. It is the responsibility of the setting to ensure the correct staff are trained with an accredited provider, and should form part of a continuing process of improvement for every school, club, business or organisation whose work or services involve contact with children.
The one-day course is divided into four modules:
An introduction to safer recruitment, abuse and abusers in the workforce
A safer recruitment process
Safer selection
An ongoing safeguarding culture and responding to concerns and allegations
'Safer Recruitment Training provides valuable insights into the signs and behaviours to look for during the application process, using real life experience and exercises to draw out discussions around more complex areas of managing the SCR, and how to scrutinise applications and references. It gives practical advice on maintaining high vigilance and ensuring that there is a culture of safeguarding beyond the recruitment process.'
